Hydro Jetting vs. Snaking: Which One Does Your Sewer Line Actually Need?

4 min readJanuary 2025

A drain snake and hydro jetting both clear blockages, but they work very differently. Understanding the difference could save you thousands of dollars.

What Is Drain Snaking?

A drain snake (also called a plumber's auger) is a long, flexible cable with a corkscrew tip that is fed into the drain to break up or retrieve clogs. It's effective for simple, localized blockages like hair clogs near a drain opening or a soft obstruction in a branch line. Snaking is fast and inexpensive, but it doesn't clean the pipe walls — it just pokes a hole through the blockage.

What Is Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting uses a specialized nozzle and a high-pressure water pump to blast water through the sewer line at pressures up to 4,000 PSI. Unlike snaking, hydro jetting thoroughly cleans the pipe walls, removing grease buildup, mineral scale, and tree root intrusions. The result is a pipe that is as close to new as possible without replacement.

When Snaking Is Sufficient

Snaking is appropriate for soft, localized clogs — a wad of hair near a bathroom drain, a small food clog in a kitchen drain, or a recent blockage that hasn't had time to harden. If the clog is simple and the pipe is otherwise in good condition, snaking is a fast and cost-effective solution.

When Hydro Jetting Is the Better Choice

Hydro jetting is the right choice when the blockage is severe, recurring, or caused by grease or root intrusion. If you've had a drain snaked multiple times and the problem keeps coming back, the snake is only poking through the clog rather than removing it. Hydro jetting eliminates the root cause and typically provides a much longer-lasting result.

The Bottom Line

A camera inspection before any cleaning procedure tells you exactly what you're dealing with and which approach is appropriate. Don't let a plumber snake your main sewer line without first knowing what's causing the problem — and don't agree to a replacement without first trying hydro jetting.
